WELCOME!
This year, the courses cross the highest, wildest part of the Lake District. Although each part of the competition area has been used in previous events, this particular combination has never been used before. We hope this will provide a new angle to the courses, so that even the most gnarled Saunders veteran will encounter new challenges of route-choice and map-reading. Our team of organizers and marshals look forward to welcoming you to Coniston!
EVENT CENTRE
John Ruskin School, Lake Road, Coniston. Open from 17.00 on Friday evening. Facilities include camping, parking, toilets, registration (on Saturday am only), gear sales and map sales.
FRIDAY NIGHT CAMPING
Free at the event centre.
REGISTRATION
In the School Hall from 06.30 on Saturday, (sorry, registration will not be open on Friday). Give your class and names to a registration official. You will receive your Sport Ident ecard (see notes on electronic punching).
You do not need to register as a pair or to bring your kit with you (there will, however, be random kit checks at the starts and finishes).
SPORT IDENT ELECTRONIC PUNCHING
The system calculates times from start to finish, as well as split times at each checkpoint. Each team carries an ecard attached to a wrist band. At each checkpoint there will be an electronic unit. The ecard should be inserted into the hole in the top of the unit until the unit flashes and bleeps, (this will take less than 1 second), showing that your time at the checkpoint has been successfully recorded.
Ecards and wrist bands will be issued at registration (attach the wrist band loosely, as you will wear it for the whole weekend). Orienteers please don’t use your own card!
AT THE FINISH- There will be a unit at the finish line where you will register to record your finish time. You must then take your ecard to the download station.
REMEMBER TO DOWNLOAD YOUR ECARD EACH DAY, OTHERWISE THE ORGANISERS WILL NOT KNOW THAT YOU HAVE FINISHED! REMEMBER TO RETURN YOUR ECARD AFTER DAY 2 (LOST / NON-RETURNED ECARDS WILL BE CHARGED AT £17.50).
IF YOU RETIRE AND THE EVENT CENTRE IS UNMANNED, LEAVE YOUR ECARD IN THE BOX IN THE MARQUEE.
DAY 1 START
The start is 1km / 20 minutes from the Event Centre. The route to the start passes through Coniston Village. Some of the route will not be signed, but the location of the start will be displayed at the Event Centre. When your start time is shown on a display clock you should enter the first taped box (minus 3 minutes) where an official will tick off your team number on a check list. From the start a taped route will lead for a short distance to the course description issue point. The course description will give a written description of the feature at each checkpoint, together with a 3-figure grid reference, a code number for each checkpoint and a closing time for each checkpoint. Start times are from 08.00 to 09.00.
AT EACH CHECKPOINT
As in previous years, most but not all checkpoints will be manned by experienced voluntary marshals from the Backpackers Club. We are indebted to them for their help. The marshals will ask for your team number. Each checkpoint will be marked with a standard orange and white orienteering marker and an electronic unit. There will be markers out which are not on your course. Check that the code number on the marker corresponds with the code number on your description sheet. THE PENALTY FOR NOT VISITING ALL THE CHECKPOINTS ON YOUR COURSE IS DISQUALIFICATION!
MID-WAY CAMP
Situated adjacent to the Day 1 finish. Please camp as directed. Beer and milk will be on sale. There will be no rubbish collection, apart from beer cans and milk cartons (but please do not stuff these with other rubbish). You must carry out all other rubbish.
DAY 2 START
There will be a chasing start from 07.45 for teams that finished within 30 minutes of the day 1 leaders. There will be a mass-start at 08.30 for all remaining teams. Day 2 course descriptions will be issued at the mid-way camp from 07.00. The start will be 5 minutes from the mid-way camp.
MEALS
Will be served to all teams by Wilf's Outdoor Catering at the Day 2 finish.
MAPS
Harvey Maps are printing a special SAUNDERS 2004 map for the event, at 1:40 000 with 15M contours. This will be on sale at the Event Centre on Friday evening and Saturday morning for £5. Suitably sized map cases will also be on sale.
VETERANS HANDICAP
This is a prize category for vets, calculated on a handicap based on the total ages of the team members, if the total is over 40 (one runner can be younger than 40).
EVENT RULES
In addition to the equipment and clothing rules laid down in the entry form, teams should observe the following very important rules:
i) All teams must report to the finish and hand in their e-card, even if they are retiring. This is a vital safety check. Failure to do so could result in a mountain rescue call-out and will result in a life-time ban from the SLMM! If the event centre is not manned, retiring teams should leave their e-card in the labeled box in the marquee before leaving for home.
ii) No dogs are allowed on the competition area, as it is sheep farming land.
iii) It is absolutely forbidden to climb any maintained walls or fences, or to enter any enclosed farmland.
iv) All competitors must carefully copy down the out-of-bounds areas from the master maps at registration.
v) The use of GPS is not allowed.
DANGER!!!
There are many quarries in the Coniston Fells- some active, some disused. Do not approach these. There are many other large natural crags.
EMERGENCIES
Make the casualty comfortable, in a tent and sleeping bag(s). Use your whistle to summon the assistance of other competitors. If possible, someone should remain with the casualty at all times. Make a note of your exact location, distinctive landmarks and grid reference. Note the time and the nature of the injuries. Write this down if possible. Attempt a mobile phone call, or head for the nearest public phone. Dial 999 and ask for the police and then for mountain rescue.
PREPARATION
Whilst the organisers have done everything they can to make the SLMM as safe as possible without compromising the nature of the event, once competitors have started they are on their own and are responsible for their own safety, just as is the case with any trip into the hills.
Prepare seriously for this event! If possible try to train in mountain terrain before the event in order to get used to your equipment, to practice navigation and, just as importantly, to get to know the strengths, weaknesses and temperament of your partner. If you have any doubts about your fitness then change to a shorter course. All the courses cross high mountains and negotiate steep terrain, often well away from footpaths. You should be capable of confident navigation using fine map detail, and you should be able to follow an accurate compass bearing in thick mist. The handbook "Mountain Navigation for Runners" is recommended reading. It will be on sale at the event centre, or send a cheque for £4 payable to “Mountain Bike Maps” to 2 Gale Crescent, Lower Gale, Ambleside LA22 OBD.
KLETS CLASSIC COURSE
The usual format. At the start you will receive a list of checkpoints. All of these must be visited, in the shortest time possible, in any order.
CAN YOU HELP?
If you are not running and are interested in helping at registration, starts & finishes at some time over the weekend then your help would be most gratefully received. Please phone Charlotte on 015395 68514 or email her at charlotte@wilfs-cafe.co.uk
