Bampton Lanequest June 3, 2003Back to events

Going to the Bampton event it seemed a very dark night, sure enough towards the end, it dropped a heavy shower on us, which added more fun to the proceedings.

The area covered was pretty large by 2 hr standards, and the map took the form of a loop to the NE with a third of the controls scattered around to the South. To score over 200 points the loop had to be taken on, the main question being clockwise or anti-clockwise.

A clockwise route enabled you to fine tune your timing in the last 20 mins with plenty of routes to choose in the south, but the roads to the East of the M6 were exposed and there was a reasonable headwind to contend with. If the loop was done anti-clockwise, you had the wind on your side going north, and the roads around controls 7, 10 &13 were possible more sheltered from the wind.

Big thanks to Joe for providing a high quality map with clear contours and plenty of route choice, It was certainly a challenge to link the controls to the South together in the most efficient manner. It was nice to see Lowther Castle and the concrete permissive road to the south had some interesting pot-holes and cattle grids to contend with.

Late news: Control 5 was vandalised (maniac with a hacksaw?) all those who visted the site after it was taken will be credited with the 10points...e-mail Carol (link on activities page) or see her at next events
