Event 2 - Tewitfield June 10, 2003Back to events

The Tewitfield Lanequest had some uncanny similarities with last week up Shap: The route weaved about across the M6 and the East Coast main railway line. The SW wind was still there, though possibly a little stronger and finally there were again plenty of hills. Rumour has it that event 5 will also follow this pattern, but the wind cannot be guaranteed!

The controls were laid out in a pretty well defined loop, It was a figure of eight, or nearer to a capital letter B. This led to a common route being used by many riders. The question was which way round to do it? Well, clockwise seemed to benefit most of the high scoring entrants. This meant a wind assisted route up the level to Holme and getting up the hills in the shortest steepest climbs, enabling good long fast descents.

At first glance the area appeared big, using a 1:50,000 scale, but there wasn't much back and forth riding required to string controls together so they could be gathered up reasonably efficiently. Full credit must go to Paul Trott who performed a clean sweep. His route was 13, 12, 15, 19, 18, 21, 25, 27, 30, 28, 29, 26, 24, 23, 22, 20, 16, 14, 17, 10, 11, 9, 8, 7, 3, 2, 1, 5, 6, 4. As if this perfect route wasn't good enough, he also did it with 9 minutes to spare!. This route clocked up 31.6 miles. Henry Syska was nearly as good, scoring 290. It was good to see a total of 83 people turning up and having a go.

The road between 30 and 28 was like a beck bottom and the controls 5, 1, 2 and 3 created a little loop of there own to attract anyone with any spare time left at the end. There was also some dicey mud on the road at Cinderbarrow farm near control 12. More than one set of wheel tracks disappeared off the edge of the road. Thanks to Malcolm Hartley for his time and trouble getting the event organised, and also to the keen timekeepers at the end clocking everybody in. Cartmel here we come...

Thanks also to Rod Carter for photo.
