Another cracking evenings worth of summer weather greeted us at Cartmel. The fact that Paul Trott was kindly organising, promised the chance of seeing a fresh winner for a change. The map that was presented to us on first glance looked fairly small, even possible that all controls might be collectable in the 2 hours, but upon closer inspection there were a lot of 'Out and Back' controls meaning a longish route. Out on the course, it soon became clear that these same controls were at the top of big hills! It wasn't instantly obvious how best to do the route and in true trailquest style, some cunning route choice was called for.
There were 3 people scored 270 in class A, these being Henry Syska, Pat McVey and S Hardy. Henry's route was 16, 17, 21, 28, 22, 24, 30, 29, 27, 25, 23, 26, 18, 19, 15, 14, 12, 13, 6, 5, 20, 7, 2, 1, 8, 11, 9. This would cover approx 29 miles and was as good a way as any to link the controls together. Apparently there was a fantastic view from control 13 over Morecambe Bay but also looking NW from 18 displayed all the Lakes fells on the skyline. Controls 18 and 19 took a while to get and with hindsight, they could have been the two to leave, possibly allowing all the other 28 to be collected in 2 hours.
Anne Plant did incredibly well scoring 260, beating many of the gents in class A. This was after a class win at the Seathwaite 5 hour trailquest on Sunday, just 2 days previous! The hills up to controls 7 and 8 were rather steep and 5 was nearly right down by the sea. going between controls 1 and 3 was very similar to doing a time trial, fast, straight and flat roads. Even though 1, 3 and 4 looked a long way apart, they were easy to get as there wasn't a hill in sight, much easier to get rather than 22, 25, or 19 for instance. Thanks to Paul Trott and all his willing helpers, the flap jack at the end was a nice thought and very tasty. 87 people came to enter, raising approx £100 for this weeks charity, the David Rayner Fund for young cyclists. We can look forward to Witherslack now, I wonder if we'll be going up Tow Tops?...
