Well, Tow Tops was anticipated and Tow Tops it was to be! What a lovely night, wall to wall sunshine and not a breath of wind. The event was based on very quiet roads, I only saw 4 cars all night, and a tractor between 13 and 9. The controls were scattered everywhere with plenty of route choice, Control 7 was only for the brave right at the top of Gummers How, but nevertheless Paul Trott and a couple of others thought it was worthwhile.
Mr Trott again got all 30 controls and had 3 mins left unused. His route was 27, 24, 25, 23, 19, 15, 11, 10, 6, 3, 2, 1, 7, 4, 8, 5, 9, 13, 12, 16, 17, 20, 28, 18, 30, 21, 14, 29, 22, 26, clocking up exactly 30 miles. Other notable performances were Tom Somers Cocks with 290 and Anne Plant with 275. Paul decided to come down Tow Tops as he knew it was a savage climb, instead he chose a long drag up from 12 to control 28. Climbing up Tow Tops, it was great to see the Winster valley unfold below, the mown fields and hedgerows looked idyllic. Once on the top, around controls 28,17 and 16 there were great views looking across Morecambe Bay to Farleton Knot, Sandside and Arnside.
It's nice to see the championship taking place now that 4 events have been completed. It's early days yet though and will look better next week, even better after the final at Staveley. 85 people turned up at Witherslack. Thanks to Derek & Claire and all helpers for another excellent event. Tow Tops was very good practice for the Greyhound on the Helm event.... |
