Hawkshead LQ 1.6.04
The Lanequest season got off to a hilly start at Hawkshead. Hills in every direction! There were 19 controls close together to the north and 11 more widely spread ones to the south. If there were any to be left out, no. 30 had to be a prime candidate, being a long way out on a limb up on top of a very steep hill. In fact when we collected the control in afterwards, the grass was not trampled at all, so I don't think anyone visited it...
There turned out to be 6 controls that were either slightly in the wrong place, or bad to find, adding some controversy to the fun and games. The route I chose was a clockwise loop consisting of 3 5 6 4 8 7 10 9 14 15 13 12 11 16 17 19 18 20 2 21 24 23 26 22 27 29 1. This worked out marvelous, I had left 3 of the hardest to get and had a good clean run to get back with just under 2 mins spare. The winner Paul Trott chose a anti-clockwise loop starting with no.1 and the two controls he chose to leave were 30 and 3. I covered 27 miles and averaged 14.5 mph.
It was a classic summers evening, plenty of flies, hot sun and not so much wind. The hardest controls I got were 27 and 29, that climb after 2 hours was very hard, but starting off up Hawkshead Hill had paved the way for how things were to be. Climbing back up from 26 was hard work and going from 17 to 19 seemed to take for ages. Thanks to Ray, Miriam and Ken for the work put in organising, the difficulty was spot on with no-one clearing up all the controls. Hopefully a few more will turn up next week...
