The last few years have really had OK weather, even good weather so I suppose we were due for a 'bad one'. Fortunately we had John Ruskin School with its indoor facilities and perfect field to park/camp on.
Saturday morning and 420 or so teams started in horrendous conditions and by mid afternoon about 100 teams had retired with stories of being blown off their feet and being worn down by the relentless rain. However many made it to the overnight camp at Stool End Farm, Great Langdale, mostly in very good spirits. The weather dried up in the afternoon so competitors managed to dry out a little.
Sunday saw 286 teams start and the rain lash down again. Conditions improved during the day so that by the afternoon we had people sitting on the grass outside the school enjoying the Wilfs meal!
There were the usual disputes about misplaced and mispunched controls, all made harder by the weather conditions. Always check that the control number matches the one you are trying to find....
I was reassured that teams could take rational decisions about their own ability to continue and complete courses or not. You all pay to enter & for some who have travelled a fair distance there may be a temptation to carry on what ever.
There were some hicups in the admin. so for those affected, huge apologies and it'll be sorted next year.
I hope to see you all next year. |
