| Farewell lunch at Wilf’s Café for West Midlands blind man set to run |
3 down, 4 to go - Dave is doing well. It all finishes with the London Marathon on Sunday 13th April
Staff at Wilf’s Café, Staveley provided some nutritious tasty treats for Blind Dave Heeley this weekend, just days before he embarks on his amazing challenge. Dave and his family received a heroes welcome and lots of Wilf’s famous chocolate brownies at the Café.
Inspired by the totally life-transforming independence provided by his guide dog, Dave Heeley, from West Bromwich, is running Guide Dogs’ Seven Magnificent Marathons challenge which will see him push the boundaries of human endurance; running seven marathons, on seven continents, in seven days in April 2008.
The eyes of the world will be focussing on blind Dave Heeley and his sighted guide Malcolm Carr as they begin the first leg of Seven Magnificent Marathons on Monday 07 April 2008 in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands (Antarctica). This will be followed by six subsequent gruelling legs in Rio (South America), Los Angeles (North America), Sydney (Australasia), Dubai (Asia), Tunis (Africa) and London (Europe) – arriving in spectacular style for the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 13 April.
Dave, who has been registered blind for the past 20 years, won’t be able to see the locations, routes and supporters – and will rely on his sighted guide Malcolm to accompany him safely around the global marathon circuit. At home, Dave relies on the amazing work of Guide Dogs, the charity that has provided him with life-changing freedom of mobility through guide dog ownership spanning over 10 years with three loyal and dedicated dogs; Peter, Carla and currently Wicksie.
The challenge is far beyond the capabilities of most people, and Dave will need enormous physical and mental stamina to complete his Seven Magnificent Marathons. The punishing schedule involves running 183.4 miles in a week – 26.2 miles a day – putting incredible strains on his body. He will need to remain focussed and use every ounce of strength, as he smashes through pain barriers, time zones and jet lag; all factors he will have to overcome as he pushes the boundaries of human endurance to realise his dream.
Find out how he is getting on from his website

| Nominated for Vegetarian Society's award for the Best Sports Venue for Vegetarians |
Veggie chilli, our biggest event seller, gets recognition!
We have stuck to our guns in the belief that a predominantly vegetarian menu at the events we cater for provides excellent energy giving and recuperative properties.
Our veggie chilli with brown lentils, loads of veggies and our own mix of mild but tasty chilli spices is our biggest seller and should be classified as a 'Super Food'! It is also vegan.
Our cakes are all made with a vegetarian marg.(& non hydrogenated), the eggs are free range and the cheese we use is also suitable for vegetarians. |

Paul Clavey, a triathlete from Kendal has just completed a unique endurance triathlon that has never previously been attempted. Over the weekend of the 14th/15th July, he embarked on what could arguably be regarded as amongst the toughest of multi sport challenges in the country.
The challenge, which has since been labelled ‘The Clavey Lakeland Triathlon Challenge’, started on Saturday morning by swimming the 5.5 mile length of Coniston Water. Then it was on to the bike to cycle 114 miles following the hilly course of the Fred Whitton Cycle race which traverses all the major Lakeland passes by road. Starting from Coniston the route takes in the passes of Kirkstone, Dockray, Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter before heading out along the west coast and over Hardknott and Wrynose passes, ascending 12,500ft of ascent, to finish back in Coniston. After a short transfer to Keswick the run section, which started around midnight, followed the Bob Graham Round, a 74 mile fell run over 42 Lakeland summits cumulatively ascending the height of Everest at 27,500ft. The route traverses the key summits of Skiddaw, Blencathra, Helvellyn, Fairfield, Bowfell, Scafell, Pillar, and Great Gable with four road crossings at Threlkeld, Dunmail, Wasdale and Honister to finish back at the Moot Hall in Keswick.
Each of these disciplines are significant sporting achievements in their own right. Paul was successful in linking all three in the form of a long distance endurance triathlon, something that had never previously been attempted. The challenge took 43.5 hours, and he was supported in the lake, on the road and on the fell by many friends and family.
Paul’s challenge was sponsored by a number of companies – Wilf’s catering who provided all the food for the entire team, Lowe Alpine, Gore Bikewear, Probikekit and Falke socks (Sidas UK).
He has dedicated the challenge to the charity WaterAid, an NGO who aim to provide essential clean drinking water to some of the world’s poorest people in Africa and Asia. The fund raising page can be found by following the link www.justgiving.com/paulclavey. All money received will go to the charity. |

| "Never Stop Exploring" |
| A new formatt Ace Race went off very well with a full entry of competitors. Weather was mixed and the cold, windy weather with fresh snow on the mountain tops made the canoeing on the new 'sit on tops' a very chilly affair. Further rain on Sunday meant that leaving the field was reliant on the two hard working farmers and their tractors. They started at 3.30pm and we were last to leave (except for Phil, the organiser) at 7.30pm! |

| Snow and hail with poor visibility gave the cometitors a hard time on day one. Alas as Ivor Powell and John Hunt came through a full half hour before the Davies brothers to claim the Elite prize again they realised they had missed a control. The Davies come out tops. Plus an ex-student employee of ours wins the B-class after nearly retiring on Day 1 because they thought they had had such a bad day only to realise they were lying 2nd! |

| Apologies to all at the Tamar Triple |
Unfortunately driving down on Friday we had a blow out on the Landrover causing an uncontrollable swerve ending up with us jack knifed across the motorway and facing the wrong way up the motorway. Absolutely amazingly, all the traffic on a very busy motorway stopped and we managed to pull onto the hard shoulder, now facing the wrong way. Two tyres and rims shredded and one axle of the trailer bent means it's not a quick repair.
The two of us are OK. Having a 'rolling motorway closure' by the police so that I could turn the trailer round is a first, well this has never happened before, and the prospect of getting a bill for re surfacing the motorway where our wheel rim gouged out a neat arc is a bit daunting.
See you all at the next event!

| New extension to café |
For frequent visitors to the Café during most of 2003 the sight of our half finished extension was becoming commonplace. It is now finally finished and fully operational, we think it makes a big difference!
Downstairs can seat 30 or so people not only on our standard tables but also a nice big 'group' table. With the new comfy sofa area and coffee tables we have tried to create a slightly different feel for relaxing, reading the papers and chatting. We even have a book club, free of charge.
The extension also includes a new café kitchen that enables us to better accommodate catering for functions, parties etc. To complete the change we have added a few new items to the menu, including buttered crumpets, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, paninis (hot sandwiches) and prawns! Come and see what you think. |
