Eagle Ski Club Talk – Ski Ascents in Tajikistan’s Alichursky Mountains- Derek Buckle

A bleak windswept campsite

Booking Essential – see below

Derek Buckle, 72, is a member of the Alpine Club and a past Vice President. He has extensive mountaineering experience throughout the world; notably Tibet, Greenland, Kyrgyzstan (Tien Shan), Tajikistan (Pamirs), Russia & Georgia (Caucasus), India (Garhwal, Himachal Pradesh, Zanskar), China, South America (Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador), Antarctica (Antarctic Peninsula) and numerous trips to the Alps. He has made over 60 first ascents around the world as well as many new routes in Britain.
He will be talking about his trip in April 2016, when he, Stefan Jachmich and Anna Bushe visited the Alichursky range of the Tajik Pamirs to explore the upper reaches of the Bazar-Dara Valley. This area has seen few mountaineers and they believe they were the first to have ventured into the area on skis.
Despite deep, unstable snow conditions members of the team made successful ski ascents of Pik Perestroika (4,952m), Pik Glasnost (4,918m) and Pik Druzhba (5,021m), none of which have previously reported ascents. As well as talking of their time in the mountains, he will be describing the sights and culture in the borderland of Kyrgyzstan-Takjikistan and the highlights of their time spent in the Bazar-Dara Valley.

The lectures are given by members of the ESC but are open to anyone with a love of the mountains – there’s no need to be a member of any club. This is the third year we’ve organised the lectures, bringing speakers from across Britain and France so that we get the opportunity to share in their adventures and get inspiration for our own. These events are also about meeting new people as well as old friends, and exchanging information and gear.

For anyone wanting to get into ski touring the Bring and Buy part of the evening is a good way of getting started with second hand gear. I know people are looking for touring set ups and boots, so do bring your spare stuff along as well as any budding mountaineers you come across.
